I am in the midst of a bunch of different things grabbing my attention on which I would like to share my learning: I am currently spending a week at the Vandercook College of Music taking a MECA course entitled Developing the Successful Jazz Ensemble with Mike Steinel, professor of jazz studies at the University of North Texas and author of Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble.

I am also currently taking another MECA course online entitled Finale Music Notation Software with producer, composer, copyist, and arranger Vince Leonard.

The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCAAS) in conjunction with the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) and a variety of other arts education organizations has released new national core arts standards. Our state has also released Core Companion Fine Arts Standards. Both of which I would like to study more and share my thoughts with you. A great resource right now is Tim Purdum, an Iowa music educator.

Some other blogs and websites I follow around standards-based learning have been updated including: Champlain Valley Union High School and Adlai Stevenson High School.

Our vertical PLC has been meeting over the summer to clarify power standards and design assessments for the coming school year. In addition, Infinite Campus has undergone a major overhaul, and we have been discussing how this will change our grading practices for next year.

I am also getting married in less than a month, which means lots of planning, honeymoon, moving, and not a lot of time for reading, reflecting, blogging... So I'll get to these things when I get to them. Happy summer!

Burton Hable

Burton Hable is an instrumental music educator from Central Iowa. In 2013 he helped open Centennial High School in Ankeny, the first time in forty years that a school district in Iowa expanded to two high schools. He served there through 2018 as Assistant Director of Bands: conducting the 10th Grade Symphonic Band, directing the varsity Jazz Collective, co-directing the Centennial Marching and Pep Bands, teaching music theory, and providing individual and small group lessons to brass students in grades 6-12 at Prairie Ridge Middle School, Northview Middle School, and Centennial High School. During his tenure in Ankeny, enrollment in band grew from 450 to nearly 700, the jazz program expanded from four to seven ensembles, and ensembles under his direction were invited to perform at Iowa State University, Harper College, and the Veterans Day Parade in New York City.
